About Jamie Park

Voice: Beginner — Learning out loud | Aedilis Contributor

I started with $200 in a checking account and a spreadsheet full of questions.

I’m Jamie Park. I’m 26. I work a regular job, I don’t have a finance degree, and two years ago I genuinely didn’t know what an index fund was.

I’d always felt vaguely guilty about money — like everyone around me had figured something out that I missed. I’d open a personal finance article and run into words like “tax-loss harvesting” or “asset allocation” and close the tab. It felt like it wasn’t written for people like me.

That’s why I write at Aedilis.

Where I Started

When I graduated college, I had about $28,000 in student loan debt and nothing saved. My first job paid $47,000 a year, which felt like a lot until I realized how much rent ate up in my city.

I wasn’t doing anything wrong, exactly. I was spending less than I earned. I had a 401(k) through work that I’d enrolled in because HR said to. But I had no strategy. No plan. No idea how money was actually supposed to grow.

The turning point came when a coworker mentioned she was on track to retire at 42. I was 24 at the time. I asked her how, and she said two words: index funds.

That sent me down a rabbit hole I haven’t come up for air from since.

What I’ve Learned (So Far)

I’m not going to pretend I have it all figured out — I’m still figuring it out alongside you. But here’s where I’ve gotten to:

The basics actually work. Max your 401(k) to get the employer match. Open a Roth IRA. Put everything in low-cost index funds and leave it alone. It sounds too simple. It isn’t. The boring stuff is what actually builds wealth.

Your savings rate matters more than your salary. I’ve watched people earning $120k live paycheck to paycheck. I’ve read about people earning $52k who reached financial independence in 12 years. The gap isn’t income — it’s the percentage you keep.

You don’t have to be miserable to build wealth. The version of FIRE I was first exposed to was all about extreme frugality — rice and beans, never eating out, no vacations. That felt unsustainable to me. What I’ve found instead is intentional spending: spend freely on what matters, cut ruthlessly on what doesn’t.

Starting matters more than starting perfectly. The best investment strategy is the one you actually execute. Don’t wait until you understand everything. I sure didn’t.
